Italian Coast Guard Surveys Stromboli Eruption

The alert level for Italy’s Stromboli volcano was raised from yellow to orange following its eruption on Sunday, December 4.

According to the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV), a lava overflow and intense explosive activity started from the north crater on Sunday before a larger explosion occurred from the central-southern crater area of the Sciara del Fuoco.

INGV said the volcanic events had no direct link with the magnitude 4.6 earthquake recorded earlier that morning near the island of Vulcano.
