Sheriff's Deputy Uses Heimlich Maneuver to Save Choking Toddler

A Santa Fe sheriff’s deputy used the Heimlich maneuver to rescue a one-year-old girl who was choking on a Cheeto while in a vehicle on Interstate 25.

The Santa Fe County Sheriff released footage of the incident on June 23, saying it took place on June 5.

The officer, named as Deputy Sheriff Patrick Ficke, spotted a vehicle driving erratically.

When he initiated a traffic stop, two adults exited the vehicle holding an infant they said was not breathing.

Ficke carried out the Heimlich maneuver and after a time the object blocking the child’s airway was dislodged. “It was pretty scary for a bit,” Fick said. “I was just lucky I was there at the right time.” Credit: Santa Fe County Sheriff via Storyful
