South African President Ramaphosa Calls for Lifting of 'Unjustified' Travel Bans

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa said he was “disappointed” by “unjustified” travel bans put in place by the US, EU, UK and others on South Africa and several other southern African countries following the emergence of the Omicron variant.

In an address to the nation, Ramaphosa said: “We call upon these countries to immediately and urgently reverse their decisions, and lift the bans they have imposed before any further damage is done on our economies and the livelihoods of our people.”

Ramaphosa also said the new variant should act as a wake-up call regarding the necessity for equal access for all to vaccines. Credit: Cyril Ramaphosa via Storyful
