'Storm Hunter' Plane Gathers Data From Strengthening Hurricane Ian

Footage from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Aircraft Operations Center shows a “storm hunter” plane flying over the Caribbean gathering data from the eye of Hurricane Ian.

The video, which was posted on Twitter, shows a team of NOAA weather experts working inside the aircraft.

The National Hurricane Center (NHC) upgraded Ian to a “major” Category 3 storm and warned of wind speeds of over 125 mph as it made landfall over western Cuba in the early hours of Tuesday, September 27.

The NHC warned of life-threatening conditions developing along Florida’s west coast, with areas from Fort Meyers to Tampa Bay most at risk. It said tropical storm conditions could be expected in central-west Florida by Tuesday evening, with heavy rainfall forecast for the Florida Keys and southern Florida.
