From former convents turned luxury hotels, to standing time capsules which transport guests back to 18th century Venezia, the city of canals and lagoons offers visitors a bevy of accommodation choices during Carnival -- or anytime -- that satisfy every taste: classic, authentic Venetian décor to modern, contemporary lodgings for the damask- and Murano-averse.

Here's a selection of luxury to budget properties in the city during Carnival:

Hotel Canal Grande -- Splurge
Want to play the role of an 18th century rich Venetian merchant with cash to spare on some of the most luxurious rooms in the city? Check into the Hotel Canal Grande where no detail is spared from classic Venetian embellishment. We’re talking damasks, gold-framed mirrors and Murano glass and Italian marble. Based on 706 Tripadvisor reviews, the hotel was also ranked the No. 1 luxury hotel in Venice with reviews that praised its location, staff, décor, charm and “stunning” canal views.

Room rates start at €300 a night. During Carnival, there’s a minimum three-night stay.

DD.724 – Splurge
Not big on opulent, Venetian décor characterized by miles of damask, extravagant mirrors, and 18th century lavishness that bedecks the thousands of hotel rooms in the city? You may want to take a look at DD.724, a decidedly modern boutique hotel and pitched as an alternative to the “ever more dominant conventionality of mass tourism.” Situated next to the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, the property also doubles as an art exhibit for local and Italian painters and houses a library of curated art books. Rooms are sleek and modern and outfitted with furniture made by Italian designers, beam ceilings and stainless steel kitchens.

Room rates start from €200

Centurion Palace --Splurge
Once upon a time, Centurion Palace housed chaste nuns who roamed the halls. But today, the former convent is occupied by well-heeled, deep-pocketed travelers looking for a pampering hotel experience. Overlooking St. Mark’s Basin at the mouth of the Grand Canal, guests stay in modern, contemporary rooms and suites with a private garden, gourmet restaurant and butler service. Each apartment is different, from a Presidential Suite swathed in red, to sedate, sleek modern grey-mauve palates for their superior suites.

The hotel is offering a special Carnival package that includes a welcome bottle of Prosecco, a mask for the festival, and free Wi-Fi for about €500 a night.

Ca’Dogaressa -- Budget
Another property styled after 18th century Venice, rooms at the Ca’Dogaressa are decorated with typical Venetian glass, rich fabrics and draperies, and precious marble. But at a fraction of the price of other opulent hotels. Overlooking the Canale di Cannaregio, around the corner from the Jewish Ghetto, the property is centrally located, but feels far from the madding tourist crowds.

Room rates start at €80

Residenza de l’Osmarin –Budget Bed and Breakfast
Just 300 meters from Piazza San Marco, this bed and breakfast was recently renovated and provides waterfront views of the canal. Instead of opting for flashy turn-of-the-century Venetian décor, the property hosts elegant but tastefully modest rooms such as The Flower and The Artist’s Room, as well as a suite. Bathrooms are modern and clean.

Room rates €100

Carnival of Venice runs January 26 to February 12.
