Zulkifli Noordin and Utusan apologise, pay costs for defaming ex-PKR leader

Former Perkasa vice-president Datuk Zulkifli Noordin has retracted a defamatory blog post and agreed to pay an undisclosed amount in costs to ex-PKR deputy president Dr Syed Husin Ali, news portal Malaysiakini reported.

The company behind the pro-Umno newspaper Utusan Melayu (Malaysia) Bhd will also pay an undisclosed amount in costs to Syed Husin and will withdraw its article which had quoted Zulkifli's blog.

Both Zulkifli and Utusan have apologised, while the Perkasa leader also withdrew his his counterclaim on Syed Husin, Malaysiakini reported.

The settlement was recorded at the Kuala Lumpur High Court today.

The blog post published in November 2011 was titled "Anjing-anjing Pencen" (retired dogs), an apparent reference to Syed Husin, who sued Zulkifli for RM10 million.

Zulkifli's post was subsequently published by Utusan the same month in an article titled "Zul Noordin Nafi Dakwaan Syed Husin" (Zul Noordin denies Syed Husin's allegations).

Syed Husin was represented by PKR leader N. Surendran and lawyer Latheefa Koya, while Zulkifli's lawyer was Mohd Ruzaini.

Utusan was represented by Datuk Firoz Hussein.

The former PKR deputy president filed the suit on January 27 seeking RM10 million in damages, interest, cost and other relief besides an injunction to prevent the defendants from further publishing defamatory statements about him. – September 29, 2014.
